The Golden Years

Manderfield’s Home Bakery was introduced to the Fox Valley by Frank and Marie Manderfield. After working at bakeries in Brillion and Kaukauna, Frank began producing baked goods out of Marie’s kitchen on Melvin St. in Appleton, Wisconsin.

1934

Best Bakery

Frank’s son Dennis established his own bakery in Menasha called Best Bakery. Married to Lois in 1957, they raised 7 children and successfully ran the business for 16 years. Frank retired in 1964. Dennis sold Best Bakery in 1972.

1956

A Third Generation

Inspired by son Mike's interest in baking and the birth of son Matt, they reintroduced Manderfield’s Home Bakery to Appleton. This popular location on Calumet St. paved the way for a third generation of bakers. In 1982, son Paul joined the business, eventually becoming general manager. Four years later, daughter Lisa, a decorator and manager, married and moved to Buffalo, NY, where she and husband Marve now operate Ohlson’s Bakery & Cafe.

1979

North Appleton Expansion

A second North Appleton location on Ridgeview Drive was constructed to accommodate growing wholesale demands. However, in 1996, in an effort to return their focus to loyal retail customers, that bakery was sold.

1987

New Menasha Location

Hoping to expand custom cake production, and capitalizing on Best Bakery’s popularity in Menasha, a new store was open at 811 Plank Road. Son Jerry, who joined the family business in 1986 with a passion for cake decorating, became the manager of this location.

1996

A New Era

Dennis began to turn over the corporation to sons Paul and Jerry. The same year, son Doug joined the family team, focusing on sales and marketing. Though Dennis and Lois are semi-retired, they continue to work while providing their knowledge, support and love.2001

New Bakery in Darboy

Recognizing rapid growth in the Fox Valley, a brand-new facility was built on the East side of Appleton at W3176 Springfield Dr. near Darboy. With streamlined production and a spacious store, this location immediately replaced the Calumet St. location after it celebrated 26 years in business.

2006

The Legacy Continues

Teamed with a group of dedicated and talented employees, the Manderfields opened a third location on Appleton’s west side near the Fox River Mall. Located at 5100 Michaels Dr., this bakery features state of the art decorating facilities, a coffee café, and a comfortable wedding cake consultation room. In 2012, Travis Manderfield, great-grandson of Frank, proudly joined the family business as a 4th generation baker.2010
